What are Cellular Networks?

Most commonly used for mobile phone networks, cellular networks allow users to make calls via radio waves that are transmitted through cell sites. The constant building and reinforcement of these systems has enabled billions of people to communicate with each other remotely via phone calls and SMS messages, as well as allowing governments and companies to broadcasts information to wide audiences. Over these cellular networks, the first generation wireless networks were developed, facilitating voice and data communications at low data rates. Now consumers are accustomed to accessing fourth generation mobile networks, or broadband networks, that can transmit enough data to stream and even download videos, audio files, PDFs, and other rich media. Today's mobile networks have transformed the mobile phone into the "on ramp" to the Internet, making them the access point for information of all kinds, common tools and communications, and training materials.
