What is Digital Identity?

Digital identity is the idea that everything interacting in the digital realm has or acquires a set of data or attributes, both inherent and changeable, that uniquely identify them as a person or entity online. Relevant to issues of privacy and authentication, digital identity encompasses a wide array of contextual and technical identifiers that exist in a ontological taxonomy. Traits can be understood and accepted in mutually agreed upon contexts such as when providing data like name and address for a PayPal transaction, and in the far more technical view that describes the relationships of these entities and objects to each other in cyberspace.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • - ingrid.melve ingrid.melve Nov 19, 2014 Digital Identity is important both for the self representation and privacy, but also for the interaction with all digital elements of life (including the in the learning environments). In Norway norms are different from in the US, and children have more freedom both online and IRL (see for example "It´s Complicated" by danah boyd for how much more restricted life is for young people in the US). When many services are located in the US cloud, rules for usage are different from what users expect. This has security and society implications.
  • In the years to come we all will be using a more diverse amount of internet resources, apps, services and so on. By having av uniqe identity all that you do will be a part of your "portfolio" and you can easily find it many years after if you need to. Privacy is an issue, but why do you need to be online anonymously? - stefan.reppe stefan.reppe Dec 7, 2014

(2) What themes are missing from the above description that you think are important?

  • Federated Identification - ch.tii ch.tii Dec 6, 2014 Skolfederation.se is a Swedish tool. It is an association of organizations that have agreed to trust each electronic identities in their IT systems. A single technical solution makes it possible to automatically translate the login as the user makes locally on their school logins in the connected e-services that the user has access to. The basic idea for an identity federation is that the authentication of users is made as close to the source as possible, in the school's case, preferably when the student or the teacher logs on to the school's internal network. If the school is a member of Skolfederation a function in the network, called Identity Provider, exhibits an electronic certificate that tells that the user is known and accepted by the school. The certificate is then sent via the Identity Federation to the service user wants to log on to, without a separate login. An important point is that sensitive data as user name and password never needs to be sent over the Internet. They are not stored nor the service provider. All that information is sent to the user is trusted and the type of user, it involved. This reduces the risk of sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.
